Valcivir contains Valacyclovir, an antiviral medication utilized to address infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, which leads to cold sores (HSV-1), genital herpes (HSV-II), and shingles or herpes zoster (varicella virus). It helps alleviate painful symptoms and promotes the healing of blisters while also preventing recurrent infections.
Valcivir is employed to treat skin and mucous membrane infections triggered by the herpes simplex virus, including cold sores (herpes labialis), initial and recurrent episodes of genital herpes in individuals with a healthy immune system, and shingles (herpes zoster). Additionally, Valcivir is used for the suppression of recurrent genital herpes in those with an active immune system (immunocompetent) and to lessen the likelihood of transmitting genital herpes to others. In patients with HIV who are immunocompromised, Valcivir is prescribed for the prevention (prophylaxis) of herpes infections. It is also indicated for treating cold sores in children aged 12 and older, as well as chickenpox caused by the closely related varicella zoster virus in children aged 2 and older and herpes zoster (shingles) in immunocompetent adults.
Valcivir contains Valacyclovir as its active ingredient, which is an antiviral agent effective against herpes virus infections, including genital herpes and cold sores; it is also effective against the closely related varicella zoster virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles.
The most frequently reported side effects associated with Valcivir usage include headache, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and dizziness. Less common adverse effects may include mild, reversible neurological reactions, fatigue, and alterations in liver function tests, particularly with prolonged use.
Valcivir should not be used if you: are allergic to valacyclovir or any of its components; are pregnant or breastfeeding; have kidney or liver issues; have undergone a bone marrow transplant; or are taking medications that may interact with Valcivir without consulting your doctor, such as probenecid (for gout), cimetidine (for ulcers), methotrexate (for cancer treatment), the immunosuppressant ciclosporin, the antiviral foscarnet, or aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Valcivir should be taken whole with a glass of water, either with or without food, typically twice a day based on your treatment and your doctor's advice. It is advisable to start taking Valcivir as soon as symptoms appear, such as tingling, burning, or blisters. The dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment depend on your specific condition and your doctor's recommendations. Treatment may last from 3 to 10 days for an initial infection or longer, contingent on your situation and whether Valcivir is being used for initial or recurrent infections or for preventive measures.
You should continue taking Valcivir for the duration prescribed by your doctor, which may range from 3 to 10 days, or longer depending on your circumstances and treatment goals.
If you forget a dose of Valcivir, take it as soon as you remember unless it's time for your next dose; in that case, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
Store your Valcivir below 25°C in a cool, dry location.
